I grew up in the UK with music and entertainment from the BBC light programme, later renamed BBC Radio Two, always on in our household. After I got my very own Benkson transistor radio I tuned in to the plethora of pirate radio stations operating in the 1970s on the North Sea playing a wider mix of British, European and US music.
When I emigrated to New Zealand in 2001 and settled in Auckland I occasionally heard some of that music and that would bring back happy memories. Such is the power of music. Retiring to Greerton in 2019, I knew I had found my favourite radio station. Then I heard the call go out for volunteer operators at Village Radio and this struck a chord with me. An opportunity to share my love of nostalgic music.
